Weekend Round-up - Basketball January 27th, 2007

St. Mary's 55 - St. Maur's 13

After beginning the new year with two tough losses, the Grade 8 Titans are now riding a 3-game winning streak. Saturday's first game saw the visiting St. Maur Marauders take on the Titans at the Titan Dome. Though the team started slowly, strong second and third quarters and a harassing full-court press made the difference as the Titans rolled to a 55-13 victory. Nine Titans made the scoring sheet with Yuta Kobayashi leading the way with 19 points. Shakhar Kumar had his best game of the season, scoring 9 points mainly from inside the paint. Yuya Yoshida and Mark Dunphy each had 5 points for St. Mary's.

St. Mary's 31 - YIS 7

Saturday's second game pitted the TItans against visiting YIS. The Titans' press was too much for YIS as St. Mary's quickly went up 21-0 in the first quarter. Leading the way for St. Mary's was Mark Dunphy with 9 points. Pranav Mehra came off the bench and quickly found his shooting rythm, hitting three quick jump shots for 6 points. The final score was 37-7 for St. Mary's.
The team plays at home on Friday in their last game of the regular season against Aoba International School (at home).

Rainy Day Thoughts

From grey skies to rain. Days and days it has rained. As I sit in my small circular office no window but a skylight that allows me to gaze upon the off-white weathered wall of the building next to us. The rain dances rhythmically off the glass then runs down the panes of glass - like the saddest of tears. The silence in the rain brings a quiet that makes me sleepy. My mind relaxes with each drop that falls, each sad tear a thought. Each thought a moment of my life.

The Human Spirit

The Earth moved. Did it move for you too? Shindo 6 on the Japanese scale. Now, the Earth has moved over 400 times. The children screamed. The adults went quiet. All hoping it was not "the big one!" If it is, will we survive? Will Mt. Fuji become active again? Will a tsunami (tidal wave) follow in the ensuing seconds. It is cold outside. How much longer until it snows. No homes, camped out in tents. Only soup with a few vegetables. The elderly grow weak. The young grow restless. But everyone grows together and the sense of community and cooperation thrives amid all that is frightening and threatening. The Human Spirit.

A Letter

Notes, memos, letters, cards, postcards. I used to love getting a little note from a friend. It was great to think that someone actually took time out of their busy schedule to find some paper, write and then ensure it was delivered. E-mail. Impersonal, automated, cut and paste. How do you know the tone of an e-mail? Capitals define shouting. Defined by whom? Capitals could merely emphasise a word. Grammatical rules for e-mail now come in to play. A letter was always just so much more friendly and personal. I miss getting real mail.

St. Mary's 1 - ASIJ 0

The A Team Titans faced their strongest opponents yet last weekend, prevailing 1-0 against a determined visiting team from ASIJ. Once again, keeper Bruno Ortiz-Canavate managed to keep a clean sheet in the face of some aggressive offensive attacks. Bruno has now played 210 minutes without allowing a goal. Much credit once again must go to the devenders who, like last week, bent but did not break in the face of strong attacking play from the opposing forwards. Taiki Hirata had a strong game, controlling the ball and setting up some good opportunities for his position on the back line. Justin Nagashima scored his second goal fo the season to preserve a narrow victory. Alan Williams impressed with his good work along the wings, setting up numerous dangerous chances.

Weekend Round-up - Soccer A September 16th, 2006

The Titans A team headed into week 2 of the MS soccer season missing two of their key players. Kento Nakamura and Justin Nagashima were both on the injured list for the match against CAJ last weekend. However the team showed good poise against a relatively strong CAJ team, emerging with a 2-0 victory. Keeper Bruno Orits-Canavate made a coupe of superb leaping saves to record his shutout of the young season. Tanjib Hasan put the home team in front in the first half with a massive strike from 25 yards that sailed into the netting. St. Mary's 3 - ASIJ 0

The Titans completed their five-game season with a home fixture against ASIJ. Alan Williams was the last Titan to touch the ball on an ASIJ own goal to open the scoring. Then jsut four minutes into the second half, Kevin Line sped down the right wing and scored a truly sublime goal, lifting the ball from 20 yards out while being dragged down. The ball curved over the keeper's outstretched hands and bulged the twine just below the bar. I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding effort of the team throughout the season. To win every game and outscore the opposition 21-0 is a great testament to the team's effort and determination. The defending corps of keeper Bruno Orits-Canavate, Yuya Yoshida, Tommy Someya and Alex Auvaro deserve credit for keeping a clean sheet in every game. Top scorer for the season with 7 goals is Tanjib Hasan. The team plays in the season ending tournament on November 4th, 2006 at ASIJ.

Weekend Round-up - Soccer A November 4th, 2006

Kanto Plain Tournament Champions

The Titans MS soccer team finished their season on a winning note at ASIJ last weekend. Victories of 3-1 v. YIS and 14-0 v. St Maur set up the Titans for a championship game v. CAJ, a team which had earlier surprised the widely favored ASIJ side 2-1 in a thrilling encounter to open the tournament. The Titans expected a challenging game as CAJ had demonstrated superb skills in winning both of their preliminary games. However, 9 minutes into the opening half, the score was 4-0 for the Titans and the half ended 5-0. In the second half, CAJ roared back with 3 unanswered goals, and looked to be pressing for a fourth, as the Titans looked stunned and disorganized in their own half. Kevin Line scored perhaps the most important Titan goal of the season to stem teh CAJ onslaught, dribbling past several defenders before depositing the goal into the net, resulting in a final score of 6-3. Tommy Someya and Alex Auvaro were pressedinto service as keepers and performed very well in goal on short notice.

I would like to pay top tribute to a team that scored 44 goals in total during the season and tournament, allowing only 4 goals against them. They began as a team of individuals and learned as the weeks passed to play as a group and make the sacrifices necessary to ensure victory.

Weekend Round-up - Basketball December 2nd, 2006

St. Mary's 41 - CAJ 25

A stronger 4th quarter allowed the grade 8 Titans to pull away for a 41-25 victory over CAJ on Saturday. Player-of-the-game Mark Dunphy led the way with 14 points, while Yuta Kobayashi scored 8 points, Tanjib Hasan had 7, and Takumi Kinjo chippin in 6 points.
The Titans' trappoing defense was teh difference in the 4th quarter, creating numerous turnovers, which led to plenty of fast-break opportunities. The Titans outscored CAJ 16-6 in the final frame, largely due to their press.
The team is still learning to fun their offense. With more attention to detail and better shot selection, they should be ready for their away games this week against AOBA and ASIJ.

Weekend Round-up - Basketball December 9th, 2007

St. Mary's B 27 - Aoba 34

For the first time in recent memory, St. Mary's is fielding two 8th grade basketball teams. On Friday the 8th grade B team traveled to Aoba for their first game of the season. The Titans started off slowly and tentatively, scoring just two points in the first quarter. The rest of the game was an evenly-matched contest, with the final score 27-34 for Aoba.
Both teams agreed to use the extra gym time available to play a fifth quarter in order to get more playing time for both teams. From the opening whistle, the B teamers took charge and outscored Aoba 18-5 in just 8 minutes of play. With more play like that, the B team players will make a good push to be included on the A team.

High scorers for St. Mary's were Justin Nagashima with 13 points, Shikhar Kumar with 8 points, and Ji Yong Seung with 6 points.

The B team also travelled to ASIJ on Saturday for a game against ASIJ's B/C team. WIth St. Mary's being the much stronger squad of the two the team had to hold back somewhat, winning 38-16. St. Mary's 34 - ASIJ 40

The 8th grade A team was away for a game this past Saturday against arch-rival ASIJ. Turnovers proved costly for the Titans, as they gave up the ball 18 times over the course of the game which ended 40-34 in ASIJ's favor. With fewer turnovers and better finishing, the Titans could have easily won the game.
Yuta kobayashi was voted player-of-the-game by his team-mates for scoring 9 points and for his harassing defense. Tanjib Hasan and Mark Dunphy each had 5 points, while Ken Hor, Taiki Hirata, and Justin Nagashima each had 4 points.
The Titans hope to bounce back Tuesday against Aoba.

The Grade 8 Titans got off to a slow start against Nishimachi on Saturday. St. Mary's found themselves down by a score of 14-4 in the first quarter, and had their work cut out for them to get back in the game.
The Titans made a run in the later stages of the 3rd quarter, led by the second unit of Tanjib Hasan, Dylan McGuire, Takumi Kinjo, Shakir Kumar, and Tommy Someya, pulling within 4 points of Nishimachi. The first unit traded baskets with Nishimachi for the fourth quarter, and tied the game on a dramatic 3-pointer by Yuta Kobayashi with less than a minute remaining. St. Mary's ended up losing by 4 points in overtime, by some valuable lessons were learned by the Titans, namely the value of playing hard for the whole game, and the importance of hitting free throws.
Yuta Kobayashi led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Ji Yong Seung with 5.
