Weekend Round-up - Basketball January 27th, 2007

St. Mary's 55 - St. Maur's 13

After beginning the new year with two tough losses, the Grade 8 Titans are now riding a 3-game winning streak. Saturday's first game saw the visiting St. Maur Marauders take on the Titans at the Titan Dome. Though the team started slowly, strong second and third quarters and a harassing full-court press made the difference as the Titans rolled to a 55-13 victory. Nine Titans made the scoring sheet with Yuta Kobayashi leading the way with 19 points. Shakhar Kumar had his best game of the season, scoring 9 points mainly from inside the paint. Yuya Yoshida and Mark Dunphy each had 5 points for St. Mary's.

St. Mary's 31 - YIS 7

Saturday's second game pitted the TItans against visiting YIS. The Titans' press was too much for YIS as St. Mary's quickly went up 21-0 in the first quarter. Leading the way for St. Mary's was Mark Dunphy with 9 points. Pranav Mehra came off the bench and quickly found his shooting rythm, hitting three quick jump shots for 6 points. The final score was 37-7 for St. Mary's.
The team plays at home on Friday in their last game of the regular season against Aoba International School (at home).

Rainy Day Thoughts

From grey skies to rain. Days and days it has rained. As I sit in my small circular office no window but a skylight that allows me to gaze upon the off-white weathered wall of the building next to us. The rain dances rhythmically off the glass then runs down the panes of glass - like the saddest of tears. The silence in the rain brings a quiet that makes me sleepy. My mind relaxes with each drop that falls, each sad tear a thought. Each thought a moment of my life.

The Human Spirit

The Earth moved. Did it move for you too? Shindo 6 on the Japanese scale. Now, the Earth has moved over 400 times. The children screamed. The adults went quiet. All hoping it was not "the big one!" If it is, will we survive? Will Mt. Fuji become active again? Will a tsunami (tidal wave) follow in the ensuing seconds. It is cold outside. How much longer until it snows. No homes, camped out in tents. Only soup with a few vegetables. The elderly grow weak. The young grow restless. But everyone grows together and the sense of community and cooperation thrives amid all that is frightening and threatening. The Human Spirit.

A Letter

Notes, memos, letters, cards, postcards. I used to love getting a little note from a friend. It was great to think that someone actually took time out of their busy schedule to find some paper, write and then ensure it was delivered. E-mail. Impersonal, automated, cut and paste. How do you know the tone of an e-mail? Capitals define shouting. Defined by whom? Capitals could merely emphasise a word. Grammatical rules for e-mail now come in to play. A letter was always just so much more friendly and personal. I miss getting real mail.

St. Mary's 1 - ASIJ 0

The A Team Titans faced their strongest opponents yet last weekend, prevailing 1-0 against a determined visiting team from ASIJ. Once again, keeper Bruno Ortiz-Canavate managed to keep a clean sheet in the face of some aggressive offensive attacks. Bruno has now played 210 minutes without allowing a goal. Much credit once again must go to the devenders who, like last week, bent but did not break in the face of strong attacking play from the opposing forwards. Taiki Hirata had a strong game, controlling the ball and setting up some good opportunities for his position on the back line. Justin Nagashima scored his second goal fo the season to preserve a narrow victory. Alan Williams impressed with his good work along the wings, setting up numerous dangerous chances.

St Mary's 2 - CAJ O

The Titans A team headed into week 2 of the MS soccer season missing two of their key players. Kento Nakamura and Justin Nagashima were both on the injured list for the match against CAJ last weekend. However the team showed good poise against a relatively strong CAJ team, emerging with a 2-0 victory. Keeper Bruno Orits-Canavate made a coupe of superb leaping saves to record his shutout of the young season. Tanjib Hasan put the home team in front in the first half with a massive strike from 25 yards that sailed into the netting. Keving LIne scored for the second game in a row, making contact twice during a goalmouth scramble before putting the ball away. Tommy Someya played a strong game a fullback, heading away several dangerous balls.
